Bioethics examines the moral dimensions of developments in the life sciences and medicine. Islamic bioethics (bio-fiqh) offers a distinctive framework by addressing these issues through the concepts and methods of usul al-fiqh.
Usul concepts such as maqāṣid al-sharīʿa (objectives of the law), necessity, maṣlaḥa and sadd al-dharāʾiʿ, together with the universal objectives of preserving life, lineage and intellect, are the core tools of Islamic bioethics.
Assoc. Prof. Tuba Erkoç Baydar's book "Fiqh and Bioethics" and her TÜBİTAK-funded project "Foundations of Bio-fiqh" aim to establish a methodological framework in this field.
