Organ transplantation — transferring an organ or tissue from one person to another — is among the issues intensively debated in contemporary Islamic law. The inviolability of the human body, the ruling on donation, necessity and the saving of life lie at the centre of the assessment.
Where cadaveric transplantation is concerned, the question is directly connected to when death occurs — especially the brain-death debate. Contemporary fiqh councils and scholars have developed differing ijtihad on the matter.
This subject is treated within Assoc. Prof. Tuba Erkoç Baydar's research in bio-fiqh and her course "Bioethics in Islamic Law", alongside discussions of the beginning and end of life.
